Designed to maximize small spaces a captain's bed has drawers built into a tall (25 inches to 85 inches) bed base. Also known as a cabin bed the purpose is to conceal storage in an attractive manner. For this reason, a captain's bed is often made of oak, ash, birch, pine and other tasteful woods. Variations on the captain's bed include headboards and footboards with built-in shelves; pull out desk/computer shelf; and even trundle beds stored on the bottom level, with shelves and drawers built above. A captain's bed usually rests against the wall, so the drawers can only open from one side. For this reason, a captain's bed in not commonly available in queen or king sizes. However, a captain's bed can sometimes be found in a double (full) size where the drawers are accessible from both sides of the bed.
