Just like the bed and foundation, mattresses come in twin size, twin extra long size, double, queen size, king size and California king sizes. The size dimensions are identical to that of the bed frame and foundation since these components are meant to all work together.
Twin sized mattress: (also called a single mattress) this is the smallest mattress available, measuring 39" wide by 75" long. This bed provides the sleeper with 39 inches of space. Twin sized mattresses and beds are generally too short for many adults and are usually designed for children.
Twin extra long mattress: as its name suggest, the twin extra long is a standard twin with five extra inches of length. It measures 39" wide by 80" long, providing the sleeper with 39 inches of space. Two extra long twin mattresses pushed together will form one king sized mattress.
Double sized mattress: (also called a full size mattress) this mattress measures 54" wide by 75" long. Double mattresses can accommodate two people; however, each sleeper only has 27 inches of space (smaller than a twin). For this reason, many couples find a double mattress too narrow and too short to sleep on comfortably.
Queen sized mattress: this is a popular sized mattress as it provides more sleep space than a double and is more affordable than a king sized mattress. Queen sized mattresses measure 60" wide by 80" long, providing each sleeper with 30 inches of space. This is the most common size of mattress produced by mattress manufacturers. Every type of mattress can be found in a queen size.
King sized mattress: (also referred to as a standard king or eastern king) this large mattress measures 76" wide by 80" long. Many couples find this to be a comfortable, roomy mattress since each person has 38 inches of space.
California king mattress: (also called the western king) this variation of the king sized mattress is designed for taller people; it measures 72" wide by 84" long. However, where length is gained, width is lost; each sleeper has 36 inches of space.
The larger the mattress, the higher it will cost. The type of mattress you choose will not only depend on your preferences, but also how much money you are willing to spend.
